Privacy Settings & Tracking
Discover how apps and websites secretly track everything you do โ and learn how to take back control of your digital privacy.
๐ Where you are in the curriculum: Week 8 of 12
In Week 1, you discovered your digital footprint โ the data trail you leave online. Now it's time to take action. This week, you'll learn exactly how companies track you and, more importantly, how to stop them using privacy settings and tools.
Your Phone Knows A LOT About You ๐ฑ
Have you ever noticed that after you talk about wanting new shoes, you suddenly see ads for shoes everywhere? Creepy, right?
That's because apps and websites are tracking what you do โ often way more than you realize.
What does "tracking" mean?
When we say apps "track" you, we mean they collect information about you and what you do. According to the National Cybersecurity Alliance โ, this can include:
- ๐ Where you are (your location)
- ๐ค What you say near your phone (if you gave microphone access)
- ๐ธ Your photos (if you gave camera/photo access)
- ๐ What you tap on (which posts you like, what you search for)
- โฑ๏ธ How long you spend looking at different things
- ๐ฅ Who your friends are (your contacts list)
Why do they track you?
Mostly for money! ๐ฐ
Apps make money by showing you ads. The more they know about you, the better they can target ads specifically at you. Companies pay MORE for ads that reach the right people.
So when a game asks for access to your microphone and it doesn't have voice chat... that's suspicious! ๐ค
The "Free" Trick
Here's a saying in the tech world:
๐ก "If the app is free, YOU are the product."
That free game you love? The company makes money by collecting your data and selling it to advertisers. You're not the customer โ you're what's being sold!
Don't worry though โ in this module, you'll learn exactly how to take control. ๐ช
