Your Digital Footprint
Discover the trail of information you leave behind online โ and learn why it matters more than you think.
๐ Welcome to CyberSafe Kids! This is Week 1 of your 12-week online safety curriculum. We're starting with the most important concept: understanding the data trail you leave behind every time you go online.
What Is a Digital Footprint? ๐ฃ
Imagine walking on a sandy beach. Every step you take leaves a footprint behind, right? Well, the internet works the same way!
Every time you go online โ whether you're watching YouTube, playing Roblox, or posting on social media โ you leave behind invisible "footprints" called your digital footprint.
Two Types of Footprints
๐ฆถ Active Footprint
Things you choose to put online:
- Social media posts and comments
- Your Roblox username and avatar
- Messages you send in game chats
- Videos or photos you upload
- Reviews or comments you write
๐ป Passive Footprint
Things collected about you without you realizing:
- Websites track which pages you visit
- Apps record how long you use them
- Your location when you post something
- What you search for on Google
- Which ads you click on
Why Should You Care?
Your digital footprint is like a puzzle. Each piece alone might seem harmless, but put them all together and someone could learn a LOT about you:
- Where you live
- What school you go to
- Who your friends are
- What you like and dislike
- When you're home alone
As Common Sense Media โ explains, the internet never forgets. Even if you delete something, it might have been screenshot, cached, or saved by someone else. That's why it's so important to think before you post! ๐ค
