Device Security & Public WiFi

Learn how to keep your devices safe from hackers, thieves, and sneaky WiFi networks. From screen locks to software updates, you'll become a device security pro!

๐Ÿ“ Where you are in the curriculum: Week 9 of 12

You've secured your accounts with passwords (Week 3) and 2FA (Week 7), and locked down your privacy settings (Week 8). But what about the devices themselves? This week covers the last piece of the defense puzzle: keeping your phone, laptop, and connections secure.

Lock It Down! ๐Ÿ”’

Imagine you left your diary wide open on a bench at school. Anyone walking by could read your deepest secrets, right? That's basically what happens when your phone or tablet has no screen lock.

Why Screen Locks Matter

Your device holds a LOT of personal stuff:

  • Your messages on Discord, iMessage, and Snapchat
  • Your Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft accounts
  • Photos and videos of you and your friends
  • Maybe even your parent's payment info for app stores

Without a screen lock, anyone who picks up your phone can see all of it โ€” or worse, pretend to be you.

Types of Screen Locks

Lock Type How It Works Pro Tip
PIN A number code (use 6+ digits!) Don't use 123456 or your birthday
Pattern Draw a shape on the screen Make it complex โ€” not just an L shape
Fingerprint Your actual fingerprint Super fast and hard to fake
Face ID Scans your face Works even in the dark

The 30-Second Rule

Set your device to lock automatically after 30 seconds to 1 minute of not being used. Yeah, it means you'll type your PIN more often, but it also means nobody can grab your unlocked phone when you set it down for "just a second."

๐ŸŽฎ Real talk: Imagine someone picking up your phone and spending all your V-Bucks in Fortnite or trading away your best items in Roblox. A screen lock stops that cold.

Setting up a screen lock takes less than a minute, and it's the single best thing you can do to protect your device. Go do it right now if you haven't already!
