Family Cyber Safety Plan
Create a household cybersecurity plan and learn how to respond when something goes wrong.
๐ Where you are in the curriculum: Week 29 of 32 โ You're deep into Mastery-level skills. This module brings everything together into a real plan your family can follow.
Mapping Your Family's Digital World
Think about how many devices in your home connect to the internet right now. Your phone, a laptop, maybe a tablet, a smart TV, a gaming console, a voice assistant, a doorbell cameraโฆ the list adds up fast.
Every one of those devices โ and every account, app, and service your family uses โ is part of your digital footprint. And every entry point is something a hacker could potentially target.
What Is an "Attack Surface"?
In cybersecurity, the attack surface is the total number of ways someone could try to break in. Think of your home: the front door, back door, windows, and garage are all entry points. You lock them all, not just the front door.
Your digital attack surface works the same way:
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Devices | Phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, smart TVs, gaming consoles, smart speakers, IoT devices |
| Accounts | Email, social media, banking, shopping, streaming, school portals |
| Networks | Home WiFi, guest networks, Bluetooth connections |
| Services | Cloud storage, password managers, backup services |
๐ Activity: Your Family Digital Inventory
Grab a piece of paper (or open a notes app) and try to list:
- Every device in your home that connects to the internet
- Every account your family members use regularly
- Every app installed on family devices that accesses personal data
- Your home network setup โ router name, who has the WiFi password, any smart home devices
Don't worry about being perfect โ the goal is to start seeing the full picture. Most families are shocked when they realize they have 15โ30+ connected devices!
Why This Matters
You can't protect what you don't know about. A device you forgot about might be running outdated software with known vulnerabilities. An old account you never closed could be breached without you knowing. Your digital inventory is the foundation of your family's safety plan.
๐ก Key Insight: The average household has over 20 connected devices. Every single one is a potential entry point for attackers.
