Your Online Reputation

Everything you post online can follow you forever. Learn how to build a digital reputation you're proud of โ€” and protect yourself from posts that could come back to haunt you.

๐Ÿ“ Where you are in the curriculum: Week 12 of 12

๐ŸŽ“ Welcome to the final module! Over 11 weeks, you've learned about your digital footprint, how to evaluate information, secure your accounts, spot threats, defend your devices, share safely, and stand up to cyberbullying. This capstone module ties it all together: building an online reputation that opens doors instead of closing them.

The Internet Never Forgets ๐Ÿง

Here's something wild to think about: that silly comment you posted on YouTube last year? It might still be out there. That TikTok you made at 2 AM? Someone could have saved it. That angry message you sent on Discord? Screenshots exist.

Digital Permanence Is Real

When you write something in pencil, you can erase it. When you post something online, it's more like writing in permanent marker on a giant billboard. Even if you delete it, someone might have already:

  • ๐Ÿ“ธ Taken a screenshot of it
  • ๐Ÿ’พ Saved or downloaded it
  • ๐Ÿ”„ Shared it with other people
  • ๐Ÿ—„๏ธ Cached it (search engines save copies of web pages)

The "Grandma Test" ๐Ÿ‘ต

Before you post ANYTHING online, ask yourself:

"Would I be okay if my grandma saw this?"

If the answer is no, don't post it. It's that simple.

This doesn't mean you can't be funny, creative, or express yourself. It just means you should think about whether Future You would be happy with what Present You is about to share.

It's Not Just YOUR Posts

Here's the tricky part โ€” other people can affect your online reputation too:

  • A friend tags you in an embarrassing photo on Instagram
  • Someone screenshots your private Snapchat message
  • A group chat conversation gets shared outside the group
  • Someone records you without permission and posts it on TikTok

You can't always control what others post about you, but you CAN control what you put out there yourself. As Common Sense Media teaches โ†—, understanding who's looking at your digital footprint is the first step to managing it.

๐Ÿ’ก Remember: The internet has a really, really good memory. Post like it's going to be there forever โ€” because it just might be.
